Burgaw Elementary students weave an outdoor sculpture.
Dixon Stetler, teaching artist from Wilmington, was in residency at Burgaw Elementary School, an A+ School of the Arts, September 26-30. The residency expanded opportunities for students to create three dimensional art, create work through collaboration, and raise awareness of the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling.
Through discussion, students learned how to initiate positive change within their communities. Students used bike tire tubes to produce bracelets and worked in small groups to produce a collaborative weaving. Additionally, students used recycled cans to create outdoor art projects.
The residency was made possible by a grant from the North Carolina Grassroots Arts Program and the Pender Arts Council. Jo Ann Alford, Burgaw Elementary's art teacher, was the on-site residency coordinator.
